In 1973 Redbone released
the politically oriented "We Were All Wounded At Wounded Knee", recalling the massacre of a band of Sioux Indians by the Seventh
Cavalry in 1890. Pat quotes. "CBS/Epic wouldn't record it, so I paid for it myself. They did me a favour
and pressed up 500 copies, and I put it under my arm and carried it to Europe. I distributed it to the radio stations in Holland
and before you know it it was number one across Europe. But they still wouldn't release it in the US. Even on
the 1973 Wovoka album and other later on US releases, Greatest hits and the recently “Essential”
2003 release , the song seemed unknown at all. It's too political, too controversial for the US government even in
2005." Wounded knee reached the number one position in all of Europe. Also the follow up, Wovoka, did very well in
Europe. In both the US and UK the songs didn´t chart at all. Also “The best of Redbone” album from 1973 became
a huge selling hit in the Netherlands and other European countries
A song written in tribute not only for the massacre of 1890 but also for
the site of a 71-day standoff between federal authorities and militants of the American Indian Movement.
There were two
victims amongst the militants amongst which Franck Clearwater who was resting in a church !
I have the feeling this is the event that changed the history of the band
too. Strangely after this song they never reached success again in the States although they made big hits in Europe. Were
they censored by the government ?

En 1973, Redbone sortit
la chanson jugée politiquement orientée "We Were All Wounded At Wounded Knee", rappelant le massacre d'un groupe
d'Indiens Sioux par le Septième de Cavalerie en 1890. Pat raconte. "CBS/Epic ne voulait pas l'enregistrer,
alors j'ai payé de ma poche. Ils m'ont fait la faveur d'en sortir 500 exemplaires que j'ai pris sous le bras et emportés en
Europe. Je les ai distribués aux stations de radios en Hollande et en un rien de temps, la chanson est devenue numéro
à travers l'Europe. Mais malgré cela les USA ont persisté dans leur refus de la publier. Même en 1973 après l'album
Wovoka et d'autres aussi sortis aux USA, Greatest hits et plus récemment “Essential”
paru en 2003, la chanson était toujours inconnue de tous. Elle est jugée trop politique, trop controversée par
le gouvernement US même en 2005 " Wounded knee devint numéro un en Europe. L'album suivant Wovoka aussi
se vendit très bien en Europe. Elle ne fut boudée que par les Etats-Unis et le Royaume-Uni. “The best of Redbone”
album paru en 1973 fut aussi un énorme succcès aux Pays-Bas et dans les autres pays européens.
Une chanson écrite pas seulement en hommage pour le massacre de 1890 mais
aussi pour le siège de 71 jours entre les autorités fédérales et les militants du Mouvement Amérindien.
Il y eut
deux victimes parmi les militants dont Franck Clearwater qui se reposait dans une église !
J'ai le sentiment que c'est cet événement qui changea l'histoire du
groupe aussi. Chose étrange après cette chanson ils ne connurent plus le succès aux Etats-Unis bien qu'ils aient sorti
pas mal de tubes en Europe. Furent-ils censurés par le gouvernement ?
